Children of God

28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.</h4 id'test-app'>

3 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears[a] we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

1. How often do you think about the return of Christ? When you do think about it, what aspects of it do you think about or anticipate? 2. John says that God’s children can have confidence (2:28) regarding his return and know (3:2) that when he comes it will be a day of joy for us, of seeing him and being changed by him. Have you ever struggled with assurance that you are God’s child? What truths have you found helpful? 3. How does this sure hope motivate us to change in imitation of Jesus? How have you seen God change you since you trusted Christ, and in what areas do you sense him calling you to change? 4. The sermon mentioned two means of grace that help us abide (2:28) in Christ: God’s Word and community. How do these help us remain vitally connected to Christ? Can you think of other practices that help us abide?
