This new “safer-at-home” season presents plenty of challenges, but having kids out of school and more evenings together at home also brings opportunities.  It’s a great time to start reading a new book with younger kids or to put a wise book in the hands of your teen.  Here are some of our favorites:

For kids 0-4 years old:

The Beginner’s Gospel Story Bible (Jared Kennedy) follows the whole plot of the Bible with short stories that are simply worded, vividly illustrated, and continually pointing kids (and parents) back to Jesus.

Everything a Child Should Know About God (Kenneth N. Taylor) is a beautifully illustrated collection of important truths from the Bible, explained in a simple way and accompanied with a review question for each.

For kids 5-8 years old:

The Jesus Storybook Bible (Sally Lloyd-Jones) movingly shows how Jesus is the hero of every story of the Bible, and how it all points to his never-stopping, never-giving-up, unbreaking, always-and-forever love.

The Ology: Ancient Truths Ever New (Marty Machowski) contains a collection of brief, kid-friendly explanations of what the Bible teaches about God, people, sin, Jesus, salvation, and lots more, with lots of Bible references for kids to track down and discus

For Kids 9-12 years old:

The Action Bible (Sergio Cariello) presents 215 Bible stories in an engaging graphic-novel format.

Dangerous Journey (Oliver Hunkin) retells Pilgrim’s Progess for young readers in Bunyan’s own words with plentiful illustration

For Teens:

This Changes Everything (Jaquelle Crow) is an unapologetic call, from one teen to another, “to reject the status quo and low standards our culture sets for us” and to live Christ-exalting lives, even while we’re young.”

Trusting God (Jerry Bridges) grounds us in the truth of God’s power over all things—even things that hurt.  A wonderful antidote to fear at an uncertain time.

For kids, teens, and parents of all ages:

The Chronicles of Narnia (C. S. Lewis).  Now is a great time to start your journey (together!) through the adventures of a family of British school children who stumble into a magical world populated by fantastic characters and encounter the great King, the lion Aslan.
